CONNECTING TO THE COMMUNITY Stone Lee, a student currently at the University of Michigan studying business and UI/UX design. He has lived in Troy, Michigan his entire life, and loves to get involved within his community. Writing has always been a favorite hobby of his and he loves to share with the people around him. very October for the past decade, citizens of Troy have been able to spot a string of scarecrows when driving past The construction process begins in August and lasts until the end of September where volunteers create each scarecrow to reflect a local business in the community with their own individual design and character. Then in October, these scarecrows are posted on the fences where they stay for the entirety of the month. Some of these scarecrows even make a preview appearance where they are featured at the Troy Family Daze in September building anticipation for the main event in October. For businesses, participating in Scarecrow Row is a twofold opportunity. Not only does it demonstrate their community involvement, but it also provides a platform for marketing visibility. These businesses have the freedom to design their own scarecrow, which typically features the company’s logo on a sign or on a t-shirt that the scarecrow will wear. However, some businesses go the extra mile when it comes to their scarecrow design. In one instance, the San Marino Club, a company that focuses on wedding venues, hopes to dress this year’s scarecrow in a wedding dress to truly represent their company. This annual event draws hundreds of families annually, and throughout the entire month, families seize the opportunity to snap photos with the scarecrows, immersing themselves in Halloween festivities. About the Author the intersection of Wattles and Livernois. The festive décor not only acts as a family-friendly hotspot but also serves as a strategic opportunity for businesses to engage in a creative community endeavor. Scarecrow Row is an annual tradition hosted by the Troy Historical Village. Dedicated members of the village collaborate with volunteers to assemble the row of scarecrows. E Left to Right: Troy Historic Village Executive Director, Jen Peters, Board Chair, Padma Kuppa, and Troy City Councilwoman Theresa Brooks Beyond being a fundraiser that brings dollars and visibility to the Village, Scarecrow Row is a fall tradition that brings smiles to the faces of community members while connecting us to local businesses through a fun activity – it’s a win, win, win, win.” - Jen Peters 6 ❙ EXPERIENCE TROY

While building scarecrows has proven to be a great way for some businesses to show their support, Chamber members, A.J. Desmond & Sons, found another way that they are able to back the community. Because their company focuses on funeral services, they recognized that a scarecrow would not necessarily be appropriate to represent their brand. Instead, they sponsor the scarecrow for the policemen. These types of partnerships aren’t uncommon either. The Historical Village has been able to truly see firsthand the connections this event has been able to foster. Most importantly, the money collected from this event all goes back into the community. Specifically, the money funds the countless events and programs that are hosted by the Troy Historical Village that are for both kids and adults. For instance, students of the Troy School District have two field trips to the village in their K-12 education, Jen Peters, the Executive Director of the Troy Historical Village, mentions that these sponsorships mean that they can keep ticket prices down. “For schools, for example, it costs as much for them to rent the bus as it does to come to see us. We know that they can’t really change the cost of the bus rental. But if we can keep the cost of the school field trip down, then it’s still doable for them,” stated Peters. The Troy Historical Village stands as a cornerstone of Troy, embodying inclusivity and community engagement. Scarecrow Row is a highlight among the various events that punctuate the year, uniting families and businesses alike. They warmly invite businesses of all kinds to connect to this annual tradition, emphasizing the welcoming of businesses to host their events and gatherings at the village. As October approaches, the anticipation for Scarecrow Row builds once more. Whether a longstanding enterprise or a newcomer, the Troy Historical Village extends a sincere invitation to join the ranks of those who've woven their story into this charming community tapestry. I joined the Chamber so that I could connect with people as well as grow relationships that could benefit the local community. A small and established community, such as Troy, can only be as strong as its smallest business, so why shouldn't we support them from Day 1? The Troy Chamber most certainly has supported me and my endeavors since my doors have opened and I aim to continue to build and give back through the resources and relationships I have made through this great network.” BIGGBY COFFEE- TROY “I joined the Troy Chamber of Commerce two years ago when TMobile for Business changed my territory to Troy and several of the surrounding cities. The reason I joined was because, in talking with several of my customers and prospects, they had nothing but great things to say about the Troy Chamber, its executives and staff, as well as how it has benefited the growth and exposure of their businesses. I also spoke with my wife who was a past board member of another local Chamber and she had nothing but glowing things to say about the Troy Chamber. That literally sold me because she doesn’t just throw out compliments like that. “ “I reached out to Sheila Denstaedt, Vice President and my Sales Manager, Brian Buell and I scheduled a meeting with her at their office. Sheila was great in explaining all of the benefits and was such a delight. She also, introduced us to the President and CEO, Tara Tomcsik -Husak, and after meeting them both, we were sold on joining. CONNECTING TO A BRIGHTER FUTURE midst economic challenges and the quest for talent retention, Walsh College and the Troy Chamber of Commerce have A Walsh College and the Troy Chamber of Commerce partner to launch innovative one-of-a-kind education program aimed at helping Michigan businesses gain and retain talent joined forces to launch a new and innovative program called the Preferred Education Partnership (PEP). This pioneering program is aimed at not only supporting businesses during tough economic times but also with growing and retaining talent here in our region. PEP stands as a strategic initiative to train and grow local talent, reinforcing Michigan's position as a hub for skilled professionals. By engaging businesses to offer access to educational benefits, Walsh College and the Troy Chamber are creating an investment in the future of Michigan’s workforce. By including families in the equation, they are also ensuring as employees and their families continue to advance in their careers and education, they will also continue to contribute to the state's economic and social fabric. Suzy Siegle, President of Walsh College, emphasizes the impact of this partnership, “At Walsh College, we know the power education has in transforming lives and communities. The PEP program furthers our commitment to Michigan's businesses and their employees, offering them a ladder to climb higher in their professional journeys while deepening talent growth in Michigan.” Photo from Left to Right: Brad Byrnes, Owner of SunByrnes Properties and Construction; Suzy Siegle, President and CEO of Walsh College; City of Troy, Mayor Ethan Baker; along with Troy Chamber Team: Tara Tomcsik-Husak, Sheila Denstaedt, Sydney Dych, Isabella Marzec, Evan Rinaldi, and Jody House. Photo Credit : Wayne Norman Photography Written by: Isabella Marzec & Sydney Dych Forward by: Andrea Walker- Leidy What is the Preferred Education Partnership (PEP)? The Preferred Education Partnership (PEP) provides businesses access to higher education at a discounted rate to help enhance the Troy business community. This unique collaboration provides notable cost reductions on both graduate and undergraduate courses to Troy Chamber member companies, their employees, and the opportunity to extend the discount to the employees’ immediate family members. In addition, businesses can communicate their educational needs with the Chamber and Walsh teams to find targeted classes and CEUs

designed specifically for employers’ continuing educational needs for their workforce, to retain talent, remain competitive, and enhance the benefits for their employees. The most notable feature of the PEP has yet to be replicated elsewhere in the country. Compared to similar educational programs, the (PEP) also provides Troy Chamber Member companies the opportunity to extend this exclusive tuition discount to the immediate family members of employees affiliated with the chamber. “We see our Troy Chamber member businesses continue to try and find ways to retain their workforce. My mother was a housekeeper at a hotel for over 20 years and never had any intention of going to college, but she would not have chosen early retirement if she knew working her job would have given me a substantial discount to achieve my educational goals. By opening this benefit to the spouses and children of our chamber members, we are creating more Education Incentives for Local Talent: Offering discounts on both undergraduate and graduate courses, professional development and continuing education at Walsh College, the PEP program is an affordable pathway for Michigan-based employees to enhance their skills and qualifications. Family-Inclusive Benefits: Extending educational discounts to the immediate family members of employees further roots the benefits within the community, encouraging long-term residency and career growth within the state. Resource for Small Businesses: Particularly beneficial for small businesses, PEP provides a competitive edge in attracting and retaining talent, contributing to a robust local economy. PEP’s Role in Fostering Michigan's Talent Pool: Troy Chamber President, Tara Tomcsik-Husak with Walsh College President, Suzy Siegle Now included with a Troy Chamber Membership All Chamber Member Companies and their Employees receive: 15% off Walsh College Graduate (master’s and doctoral) level courses/trainings, certificates, & CEUs 5% off Walsh College undergraduate-level courses/trainings 15% off Walsh College room rentals Complimentary booths at Walsh College Career Fairs opportunity in the region. Now employers will be able to add this educational discount to their benefits package to better hire and retain local talent. When you join the Troy Chamber, you are investing in a stronger local economy. “ said Tara Tomcsik-Husak, President & CEO of the Troy Chamber of Commerce. How it got started As the Troy Chamber of Commerce was looking for a new home for their headquarters, a new opportunity emerged. Every impactful initiative begins with a recognition of needs within a community and the inception of the PEP program is no exception. Suzy Siegle, President & CEO of Walsh College, suggested that the Troy Chamber move its headquarters to Walsh. This marked the inception of the Preferred Education Partnership recognizing a shared vision—a commitment to not only enhance the Troy business community but to also make higher education accessible and inclusive for individuals who might not typically have such an opportunity. Community and Career Growth: Facilities rental discounts and access to career fairs further integrate businesses and their employees into the thriving educational and professional landscape of Michigan.

Educational Empowerment to Employee Retention and Business Growth In business, individuals are both the most valuable and the most significant expense. The opportunities are endless if we prioritize the people who form the backbone of any successful business. Through providing discounts on undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education classes, the PEP actively helps businesses in enhancing the skills of their workforce. The result? A business landscape that is more competitive and resilient, capable of navigating the challenges posed by an ever-evolving economic environment. As we examine the layers of impact of this program, it becomes evident that its benefits extend far beyond educational pursuits and discounted tuition to Troy chamber members, businesses, and more importantly, the individuals they employ. It constitutes the essential foundation of any flourishing community, and the PEP acts as a valuable resource for fortifying this foundation. So, what sets the Preferred Education Partnership apart as a transformative force for Troy and the broader southeast region of Michigan? It exceeds the mere offering of discounted courses, it revolves around establishing inclusive access to education, cultivating an atmosphere of economic development, and fostering a community of well-informed, engaged, and empowered individuals. Walsh providing both in-person, hybrid, and online learning to students To learn more about the Preferred Education Partnership (PEP): “Anytime you increase educational access and opportunity, you will have economic growth,” said Suzy Siegle. “When you provide access to education in an area, you will see business growth, innovation, and new verticals being created.”
