As one of the Top Ten school districts in the State of Michigan, the Troy School District consistently strives to provide educational excellence and leadership skills to its student body. While many school districts solely focus on college readiness and business development for high school seniors, the Troy School District starts preparing students for career success in middle school. The 8th Grade Interview Program is an opportunity for middle school students in the Troy School District to participate in an interview with professional members of the Troy business community. Started by Bonnie Britton, a former media specialist, students get an opportunity to showcase their portfolio of accomplishments, successes, strengths, and passions to community and business leaders who volunteer to facilitate the interviews. From professional development and professional dress to resume writing and best practices for interviews, eighth-grade students from the four Troy middle schools get acclimated to the workforce long before their first job. Written By Tenita C. Johnson INSPIRING THE WORKFORCE OF TOMORROW, TODAY Opening Doors of Opportunity for Students and Local Businesses “There’s a lot of hope for the future,” said Sheila Denstaedt, Vice President of the Troy Chamber of Commerce. “The Troy School District is producing students who have a desire to learn. The students realize there is so much more than simply working a job,” stated Denstaedt. “At the same time, the local business community can see what is coming down the employment pipeline and providing a great opportunity to even meet their future employees or interns.” Firebird Tavern Co-Owner and Troy Resident, Tony Piraino participating in the 8th Grade Interview Program The program is two-fold: eight hours in Career Accelerator classes and the preinternship. In addition to communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills, students get to work and serve alongside their peers at top local companies. Out of 89 applicants in the 2023-2024 school year, only 28 students were selected for the pilot program. The new Career Accelerator Program (CAP) bridges the gap between education and the professional world by providing mentorship, career opportunities and business development training for students. For Troy high school juniors and seniors, a greater door of opportunity opens. 6 | EXPERIENCE TROY

Bob Chapa, CEO and President of Signarama, had two seniors work at his company in virtually every department of the business. From customer service and design to project management to leadership teams, Chapa was intentional about broadening students’ minds to think about their future career paths across multiple industries. After Match Day, the day when students are paired with their respective business owners, students spend 20 hours over the course of three months at their preinternship with their assigned business. “Strong partnerships between the Troy School District and the business community create new opportunities for our students,” said Dr. Richard Machesky, Superintendent of the Troy School District. “The Career Accelerator Program is a small part of our larger effort to provide students with more real-world experiential learning opportunities to prepare them for the careers of the future.” “Each week was a great experience not just for the interns, but for our team as well,” he said. “It was an absolute pleasure working with the Troy School District in both their Pre-Internship Program and the Business Roundtable. Our seniors were absolutely fantastic, exuding energy, and full of great inquisitive questions. We will absolutely be participating again!” EXPERIENCE TROY | 7

“The Business Roundtable provides the district with valuable feedback from the business community perspective,” stated Kendra Montante, Director of Communications and Strategic Initiatives with the Troy School District. “For example, the Business Roundtable was instrumental in assisting the district in developing the Career Accelerator Program. Troy businesses understand the importance of providing students with learning outside of the classroom, helping expose them to a variety of career opportunities.” Your Support is the key to our Success! “Over the past several years, I have been a member of the Chamber of Commerce for a handful of local communities. I can unequivocally proclaim that the Troy Chamber of Commerce stands above all in terms of creating a fun, friendly and welcoming environment for all – new members, existing members and future members. The environment begins with a fantastic staff that plans and executes a variety of networking, social and educational events to benefit Chamber members. I have had the privilege to work with this group as the Chair of the Ambassador Committee for the 2024 calendar year and they are an outstanding team. She highlights that ASE is a critical resource for businesses, both large and small, offering training and compliance updates from employment law experts who monitor legal changes in real-time. “ASE’s resources are invaluable for staying on top of regulations that affect everything from employee relations to pay equity,” says Corrado. Michelle Crockett, Principal and Chief Diversity Officer at Miller Canfield, adds that businesses should seek legal counsel to help navigate the evolving landscape of employment law. As workplace regulations rapidly change, maintaining compliance has become more complex. Legal counsel plays a key role in helping businesses navigate these changes, ensuring HR practices are aligned with current regulations. By fostering strong relationships with employment attorneys, companies can gain critical insights and proactive strategies to reduce risks and support their workforce effectively. CURRENT TRENDS IN HR Navigating the Business of Employee Relations The HR landscape is evolving quickly as companies adapt to shifting dynamics in employee engagement, compliance, and return-to-office policies. From start-ups and small businesses to large companies and organizations, it’s important to find experts dedicated to supporting businesses to gain insights into how companies of all sizes can navigate these challenges and leverage strategic HR partnerships for success. ASE President and CEO, Mary Corrado With continuous, regulatory changes, compliance remains a top priority for HR leaders. Staying informed on evolving labor laws and data privacy requirements is essential, and leveraging tools like compliance management software can help ensure organizations remain legally compliant. Mary Corrado, President and CEO of the American Society of Employers (ASE), emphasizes that companies need to stay proactive when it comes to compliance. MANAGING COMPLIANCE IN A CHANGING LANDSCAPE Miller Canfield’s Deputy Executive Officer, Chief Diversity Officer, Labor & Employment Principal, Michelle Crockett Written by Andrea Walker-Leidy & Evan Rinaldi “Smaller businesses often lack dedicated HR staff to keep up with the latest regulations. We provide our members with essential tools and insights on new lawslike Michigan’s minimum wage increase or mandatory PTO accrual-ensuring that they understand how these laws affect their operations,” Corrado explains. MANAGING COMPLIANCE WITH HYBRID WORK MODELS As companies redefine work environments post-pandemic, remote, hybrid, and inoffice arrangements have become the new normal. “Accommodation and FMLA issues are among the most pressing HR concerns, and businesses should view their employment attorney as a partner, not just an advisor,” Crockett says. “Incorporating legal expertise into your HR strategy can prevent costly mistakes down the road.” As legal requirements become more demanding, businesses that embrace expert guidance and stay ahead of changes can better navigate challenges and ensure their continued success. EXPERIENCE TROY | 19

Businesses of all sizes are grappling with constant changes in regulations, benefits packages, and compliance laws. Craig Vanderburg, COO of Trion Solutions, notes, "Remote work was a necessary response to a crisis, but as we settle into new norms, we’re realizing what’s been missing with everyone at home.” In developing hybrid models, Vanderburg emphasizes that one of the most important things to manage is the balance between flexibility and maintaining a thriving corporate culture. According to Gallup, over 50% of remotecapable employees in the United States expect and prefer hybrid work, highlighting the growing demand for flexible arrangements. As these work models become more common, managing compliance in this environment adds another layer of complexity. Companies must navigate various laws related to remote work, such as labor standards, tax implications, and employee classification. Ensuring compliance with both local and national requirements for employees working from various locations is critical. This often requires updating policies, leveraging technology for tracking, and consulting legal experts to prevent significant setbacks. At the same time, companies must also find ways to maintain a thriving corporate culture across both in-office and remote teams. This can involve fostering open communication, providing opportunities for collaboration, and ensuring that employees, regardless of where they work, feel valued and connected to the company’s mission and values. ENHANCING EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT AND BUILDING POSITIVE WORKPLACE CULTURE For smaller companies, managing the administrative demands of benefits, payroll, and compliance can also pose a significant challenge, especially as they navigate the complexities of hybrid work models. Vanderberg explains, “Smaller businesses often don’t have the infrastructure to handle complex tasks like payroll or benefits management. This is where partnering with a PEO (Professional Employment Organization) can help ease that burden.” He adds that this partnership model can provide smaller businesses with access to the kinds of benefits and compliance expertise typically available only at larger organizations. “This allows businesses with as few as eight employees to offer competitive health plans, 401(k) options, and more, helping them attract and retain talent,” says Vanderburg. Employee engagement is reshaping HR practices across industries, especially as businesses adjust to evolving workplace trends. Jeff Watt, owner of Real World HR Solutions, offers valuable insight on how small businesses can use employee engagement as a key driver for a productive, resilient culture. Watt explains that engagement extends beyond basic job duties; it’s about fostering trust and open communication at all levels of the company. A positive workplace culture flourishes when individuals feel valued, supported, and connected to the organization’s mission. By recognizing contributions, encouraging growth, and promoting open communication, businesses can inspire employees to take ownership of their roles. Prioritizing teamwork, transparency, and shared values helps build a positive workplace culture that boosts morale, enhances productivity, and attracts top talent. “We work with businesses to address the needs and strengths of their teamswhether it’s the janitor or the CEO-to create a cohesive culture that is driven by shared purpose,” says Watt. “The best things we can do is know our people and help create organizations create an environment where employees feel seen and heard.” Photo Credit by: Simba Photography Courtesy of Troy City Lifestyle Trion Solutions Chief Operating Officer (COO), Craig Vanderburg Adapting to hybrid work models requires balancing flexibility, corporate culture, and compliance. Partnering with organizations, like PEOs, offers vital support, helps ease administrative challenges, and provides greater access to resources for employees and the businesses they represent. 20 | EXPERIENCE TROY

As a small business resource, we work directly with companies to help them build internal processes that improve engagement and ensure compliance while alleviating the administrative burden. A strong, cohesive work environment is built on trust, communication, and a shared purpose. By addressing team needs and fostering a sense of value, businesses can improve employee satisfaction and drive organizational success. Watt reinforces that partnering with professionals who specialize in HR, legal compliance, and employee relations can provide crucial support. These partnerships help businesses stay agile, manage risk, and ensure compliance with changing regulations. “Partnering with small business-focused HR consultants allows companies to scale quickly and operate more effectively while mitigating risk and improving culture.” stated Watt. “It’s not about replacing internal teams... it’s about maximizing them.” In addition to collaborating with trusted HR consultants, businesses can also tap into the valuable resources offered by reputable membership organizations. These groups provide access to comprehensive training programs, unique networking opportunities, and insightful industry guidance that help businesses stay ahead in effectively managing their workforce. By actively engaging with business community resources, companies gain essential support that keeps them well-informed on best practices, emerging trends, and continually evolving regulatory changes. By investing in these strategic partnerships, businesses can enhance their HR capabilities, drive employee engagement and retention, and foster long-term growth in a competitive market. To navigate the shifting compliance landscape, businesses must continue to adopt proactive strategies, leverage expert insights, and build strong partnerships to address challenges, enhance engagement, and achieve lasting success. That’s why the Detroit Zoo chose to partner with social enterprise company, Rebel Nell to create the Detroit Zoo Collection. Rebel Nell repurposes graffiti and meaningful materials into wearable art. For the Detroit Zoo Collection specifically, jewelry and home goods were crafted from zoo’s iconic water tower and Parade of Animals mural. This collaboration highlights the commitment to community and conservation for both the Detroit Zoo and Rebel Nell. “Working with the Detroit Zoo, an organization that shares our values of environmental stewardship and education, has inspired a collection that celebrates both our city's history and its commitment to preserving nature. Now you can take home a piece of the Zoo’s history…literally,” said Amy Peterson, CEO and Co-founder of Rebel Nell. A portion of proceeds from the Detroit Zoo Collection will be used to support the Zoo’s numerous conservation initiatives and educational programs. Hayley Murphy, Executive Director and CEO of the Detroit Zoological Society, expressed her enthusiasm about the collaboration: “This collaboration allows our community to own a piece of Detroit Zoo history. Not only is each piece in the collection stunning, but every purchase helps support our purpose of igniting positive change for animals and nature.” To learn more about the Detroit Zoo & Rebel Nell, visit www.detroitzoo.org and www.rebelnell.com. The Troy Chamber’s “Step Up to the Plate” program, in partnership with the Troy School District, has been a cornerstone initiative, fostering collaboration between Troy Chamber member businesses and restaurants, and the Troy School District. This partnership not only generates excitement among families and local Troy Chamber member businesses, but also enhances school funding through community engagement. For over fifteen years, the program has raised approximately $30,000, which directly benefits educational programs and resources in the Troy School District. McVee’s Pub & Grub has participated in the program for many years. “We have enjoyed being a part of the “Step Up to the Plate” program year after year,” says Reef Palaj, owner at McVee’s Pub & Grub. “We love watching the community come together to support each other, the kids, the Troy School District and local businesses. We appreciate continued support from the community and the Troy Chamber and look forward to serving you for years to come.” The program not only encourages parents and students to support local restaurants, but the surrounding business community. Many Troy Chamber member companies have been known to cater lunch for their employees during the week-long promotion. The added incentive of a $1,000 cash prize for the school with the most returned receipts motivates healthy competition and engagement. For over 25 years, Embassy Suites by Hilton Detroit-Troy/Auburn Hill’s has partnered with the Blood Cancer Foundation (formally known as the Children’s Leukemia Foundation) to host “Trick-or-Suite”. This heartwarming Halloween event for patients battling leukemia creates a special "Trick or Treat" experience, allowing kids and their families to safely enjoy the holiday in a secure, indoor environment. “Each year we invest thousands of dollars and hundreds of volunteer hours to make this event happen, not because we expect any credit or recognition. It will always be a night to bring joy and fun to families stricken by a less than desirable situation,” stated Greg Kroesing, Director of Sales. FINANCIAL LITERACY FOR ALL Collaboration plays a pivotal role in strengthening business communities and nonprofits, as demonstrated by the recent partnership between the D-Rob Cares Foundation, Diversified Members Credit Union (DMCU), and the Troy Chamber of Commerce. In January 2024, DMCU was invited to conduct a financial literacy workshop at the D-Rob Cares Foundation's youth career boot camp and brunch in Troy. This valuable event not only allowed them to impart essential knowledge on financial management to the youth but also facilitated meaningful connections. During the event, Tara Tomcsik-Husak, President and CEO of the Troy Chamber of Commerce, addressed the students, highlighting the importance of community engagement. Kathi Sitek, Vice President of Business Development with DMCU, first met Tara through Iesha Robinson, Co-founder and Executive Director of the D-Rob Cares Foundation. That introduction sparked a fruitful relationship, leading to further collaborations with the Troy Chamber. As a result of this growing partnership, DMCU has expanded its network within the Troy community, leading to their recent sponsorship of the Troy Chamber's nonprofit conference in November. This experience underscores the power of collaboration; through introductions and shared goals, organizations can enhance their impact, foster community relationships, and contribute to the success of local initiatives. The event was designed to give young patients a chance to celebrate Halloween without the challenges of outdoor trickor-treating. Each suite was decorated by a local business with fun themes and stocked with candy donations, ensuring that every child could enjoy the magic of the season. ‘We could not be more grateful for the partnership and generosity of Greg Kroesing and his team at Embassy Suites,” said Blood Cancer Foundation of Michigan‘s President and CEO, Heidi Grix. “This amazing event allows our families the opportunity to get out in an environment that is safe for compromised immune systems. They have the opportunity to meet people in similar situations and form relationships while having a great time! It’s a tremendous amount of fun, which is needed to keep spirits up in difficult times and add hope to the experience of fighting blood cancers.” This collaboration between Embassy Suites and the Blood Cancer Foundation is another touching example of how local businesses and community organizations came together to bring joy to children facing serious health challenges. It offered a memorable, festive experience for the kids while raising awareness of blood cancer and the importance of continued support and research.
